Interesting Facts

-
On
June 30, 1862, Corporal Henderson C. Howard (Company B, 11th
Pennsylvania Reserves), the 22nd Sheriff of Indiana County, was
awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravely pursuing a
Confederate sharpshooter and fending off two others in hand
combat. He was also three times wounded in action.
- According to the census of 1810, the new county (Indiana) had
a population of 1,214, which is quite a difference from today
and the close to 90,000 people living in the county. This also
makes one think about the difference in responsibility level
from the Sheriff to the current Sheriff.
